Analysis of the thermal variation of the magnetic properties of neodymium ethyl sulfate
Description
An analysis of the observed thermal variation of the magnetic susceptibilities of Nd-ethyl-sulfate is made based on the crystal field obtained by Gruber and Satten in order to explain the observed Stark pattern in the electronic spectra of NdES. Intermediate coupling wave-functions and the corresponding reduced matrix elements have been used and the J-mixing has been taken into consideration as far as the Stark energies are concerned. The theoretical g11 is in good agreement with that obtained from magnetic resonance. It is found that the theoretical expressions for both psisub(11) and psisub(1) give excellent fit to the measured thermal variation of the susceptibilities from 287.5 K to 4.2 K. A single suitable crystal field accounts well for the observed magnetic data over a wide range of temperature. (author)
