Low-level Pu and Am drum waste assay with Monte Carlo modeling

Description

The photon emission from a 208 liter drum containing trace amounts of plutonium and americium forming low-level radioactive waste homogeneously embedded in concrete is computer modeled using the Monte Carlo Neutron Photon (MCNP) code. The modeling includes a high performance germanium detector at various points on the drum surface. A pulse-height detector tally measures the energy deposited in the germanium crystal. The photon emission drum count rate is predicted for the Ge detector by MCNP using a gaussian energy broadening. Small gram amounts of Pu and Am in the drum determine the exposure rate in mrem/hr/gram which is predicted using MCNP
