Description
A study of some features of relevance to the detection of extensive air showers produced by ultra high energy cosmic rays is presented. The Pierre Auger Observatory is used as an illustration. The present paper concentrates on the measurement of the longitudinal shower profile deduced from the detection of the fluorescence light produced by the shower particles in their interactions with the nitrogen molecules in the atmosphere.
