Magnetoelastic effects in orthorhombic and tetragonal rare-earth crystals
- 1. Bryansk StateTechnical University, 241035 Bryansk (Russian Federation)
Description
Magnetostriction, magnetoelastic contributions to elastic constants and thermal expansion are calculated in perturbation theory to second order in the one-ion magnetoelastic and pair quadrupole interactions for the orthorhombic rare-earth crystals. The contribution of the spontaneous strains and quadrupole moments to the initial magnetic susceptibility is derived. The magnetoelastic effects arising in the second-order treatment and the possibility of their experimental observation are discussed for the orthorhombic and tetragonal rare-earth crystals
