Description
Raman spectroscopy is a versatile tool that is extensively used in the fields of chemistry, physics, life sciences, pharmaceuticals, forensics, archaeology and many other branches of science. There have been several historic advances in Raman spectroscopic instrumentation from the time of its discovery to the present time such as the development and employment of lasers, holographic gratings, dielectric multilayer filters, photomultiplier tubes, CCD detectors, and the pairing of the spectrometer and the microscope. Coupled with other advances such as resonance Raman spectroscopy and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) these developments have brought Raman spectroscopy from being an esoteric research tool to a valuable routine tool that it is today. Raman spectroscopy is an important supplement to x-ray diffraction (XRD), as revealed in many investigations on phase transformations in solids
