Surface-waves and resonances associated with exposure to electromagnetic radiation

Description
Natural electromagnetic modes of oscillation of the head relevant to use of a hand-held radio telephone are investigated analytically. Undesirable resonance modes are found which are shown to occur within the regulatory frequency bands approved by Australian Communications Authority (formerly Spectrum Management Agency) for mobile telephone use. In similar fashion, the human-eye may be subject to resonance should the proposed 25-29 GHz band become active. Resonance of biological cells is considered briefly. Spherical resonance phenomena are predicated on solutions of characteristic equations. Depending on physical conditions solutions may be complex or real, leading to resonance frequencies that are respectively complex or real. In the case of biological tissue it is shown that resonance frequencies are complex; use of real frequencies is invalid, and leads to underestimation of absorbed power densities. The resonance phenomena are discussed in terms of recent surface-wave interpretations, which are applied to both electric and magnetic type resonances
