Non-trivial central extensions of Lie algebras of differential operators in two and higher dimensions

Explicit formulas for the central extensions for Lie algebras of differential and pseudodifferential operators on the supercircle S1verticalstrokeN and the general n-dimensional manifold Mn are given. Possible applications of these formulas to gravity theories coupled with higher spin fields in two and higher dimensions are discussed. (orig.)
