Description

Selection of suitable, radiation resistant grease for use in radiochemical applications involving acid and solvent vapours is an important aspect of the commissioning of DFRP. Such grease is required to ensure the endurance and proper lubrication of the rotating and moving parts of the in-cell equipment. For this application grease with aromatic base oil was selected. In order to study the suitability of this grease it was irradiated and tested for compatibility with the pertinent chemicals. The degradation of drop point (ASTM D566) and worked penetration (ASTM D 217) properties of the grease due to both radiation and chemicals (vapours of 6 M nitric acid) was studied
