Actinide removal from highly active nuclear waste solutions by solvent extraction

Description

This paper related to studies on actinide separation from highly active nuclear wastes presents the main experimental results obtained by solvent extraction of a solution simulating the radioactive effluents (HAW) produced during the first extraction cycle of the 'Purex' process. These batch experiments have shown that the decontamination factors required for transuranic elements with high radiotoxicity (103 for americium, curium, plutonium and 10 for neptunium) can be obtained by using di (α-ethyl-hexyl)-phosphoric acid (HDEHP) or tributyl phosphate (TBP) as extracting solvents and by assuming that actinides exist on extractable forms in solution. Two separation schemes involving these solvents have been proposed. Because in any actinide separation process it may be necessary to include a decontamination step for the removal of α-emitting elements from the various solid wastes produced by the reprocessing step, two possibilities have been considered in each scheme. In the first one, special treatments are used to recover plutonium sorbed on the precipitate produced by the denitration of the HAW solution. This operation is required to remove trivalent actinides. Abstract (French)

S'inscrivant dans l'etude de la separation des actinides des dechets nucleaires a haute activite, ce rapport rend compte des principaux resultats experimentaux obtenus, au moyen de l'extraction par solvant, sur une solution simulant les effluents radioactifs (HAW) issus du premier cycle d'extraction du traitement 'Purex'. Ces experiences, realisees en 'batch', montrent que les facteurs de decontamination recherches en transuraniens a forte radiotoxicite; 103 pour l'americium, le curium, le plutonium et 10 pour le neptunium, peuvent etre obtenus en utilisant l'acide di(ethyl-2 hexyl) phosphorique (HDEHP) ou le phosphate de tributyle (TBP) comme extractants et en supposant la presence de ces actinides sous des formes extractibles en solution. Deux schemas de separation faisant appel a ces solvants sont proposes. L'eventualite de devoir inclure, dans tout procede de separation des actinides, une etape de decontamination en emetteurs alpha des divers dechets solides produits lors du retraitement, amene a considerer deux options dans chaque schema. La premiere envisage de recourir a des traitements speciaux pour recuperer le plutonium fixe sur le precipite apparaissant lors de la denitration de la solution 'HAW'; operation indispensable pour proceder a l'extraction des actinides trivalents. La seconde option prevoit une separation preliminaire exhaustive du plutonium
