Multilayer anti-ballistic cermets based on titanium

Description

Antiballistic ceramics have many material and shape variants, depending on the specifications of its use. The goal of our research was hard materials with the lowest density, designed for light armor. SiC, B4C, TiC, TiN and TiB2, which are, however, very brittle after sintering, meet this criterion. However, in the preparation of cermets with a titanium matrix, other binary compounds are formed, which change the stoichiometry of the surface layers and affect the final mechanical properties of the resulting composite. Their formation by the diffusion mechanism and their amount is influenced by the temperature and contact time of the matrix and the filler. The SPS (Spark Plasma Sintering) method made it possible to reduce the lifetime of the cermet components in the liquid state as much as possible and to determine the reactive diffusion coefficients.
