The safety design of next-generation reactors

Creators

Description

The next generation of advanced light water reactors (ALWRs) is being developed in a joint program involving the utilities, both domestic and international, the Electric Power Research Institute, the US Department of Energy (DOE), and the reactor manufacturers. Goals have been set for the safety design of these systems, which exceed the safety performance of today's reactors and exceed the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission's safety goals. This paper summarizes: (1) design goals for core damage frequencies and dose limits; (2) technical principles for guiding designs; (3) design features for minimizing accident-initiating events; and (4) human factor considerations in designs
