A scaling cross section for the ionisation of atomic hydrogen by fast, highly-stripped ions
Description
A simple cross section formula for the impact ionisation of atomic hydrogen, analytic in both the projectile charge state (q) and speed, is presented. The formula rigorously approaches the Bethe asymptotic cross section at high speeds, and accurately summarises the recent data of Shah and Gilbody (J. Phys. B; 14:2361 and 2831 (1981), J Phys. B; 15:413 (1982)) for all highly-stripped (q>1/2Z) ions with E/A >= 30 keV amu-1. (author)
