The arrangements of transboundary movement of radioactive waste in the jurisdiction of the republic of Indonesia

The utilization of nuclear and radioactive material is increase rapidly in the world. This condition has the potential to increase generation of radioactive waste, both in quantity and quality. Radioactive waste management control must be done, including for transboundary movement of radioactive waste in states borders. The objectives of controlling are for preventing illicit trafficking, disposal of radioactive wastes in to the sea, and anticipating the safety risk probability if the radiological accident or incident happened on the transboundary movement of radioactive waste in the jurisdiction of the Republic of Indonesia. Due to the Indonesia's geography condition is very large, form an archipelago at the point of intersection traffic strategic world trade, and limitation of resources or infrastructure, the control of transboundary movement of radioactive waste must be implemented by grading approach with the most priority to high level radioactive waste. Multilateral approval mechanism must be arranged and applied for the shipment of high level radioactive waste from the origin to destination country that cross and/or transit in Indonesian custom area.
