Performance demonstration of a near surface repository for LLW and MLW in Lithuania

  • 1. Institute of Geology and Geography, Vilnius (Lithuania)
  • 2. Radioactive Waste Management Agency, Vilnius (Lithuania)

Description

About 100,000 m3 of solid conditioned Low and Intermediate Level Wastes, generated during operation and decommissioning of the Ignalina NPP, are to be disposed in a near surface repository - a 'hill'-type repository with reinforced concrete vaults and with engineered and natural barriers restricting access of water to the radioactive waste and release of radionuclides from the repository. Preliminary dose estimates confirms insignificance of releases of radioactive substances during natural degradation of the repository. The estimated doses are far below internationally accepted limit and they demonstrate high performance of the selected design and a selected site. (author)
