197Au Moessbauer study of Au/Fe and Au/Co multilayers

Description
The artificial metallic lattice in which two kinds or more thin metallic films are piled alternately has been noticed as a new material, especially about its physical properties. In the artificial lattice with the combination of ferromagnetic metal/nonmagnetic metal, by applying a magnetic field, the phenomenon called giant magnetic resistance, in which electric resistance decreases by more than 40% at maximum, was found, and the studies have been advanced on its physical properties and also practicality aspect. The important thing in this phenomenon is the coupling of ferromagnetic layers through interposing nonmagnetic layer. In this experiment, attention is paid to the Au layer in the artificial lattice with the combination of Au and magnetic metals, and by carrying out 197Au Moessbauer spectrometry, the effect that the magnetic layer exerts to the Au layer was examined. The preparation of 197Pt foil radiation source, the measurement of 197Au Moessbauer effect, and the preparation of the artificial lattice samples are explained. The 197Au Moessbauer spectra of the Au/Fe and Au/Co artificial lattices are shown. In both cases, as the thickness of the Au layer decreased, the increase of the magnetically torn component was observed. (K.I.)
