Use of physical techniques for dating of archaeological and geological materials in Brazil and Japan

Description

The principle of ESR (Electron Spin Resonance) dating is described briefly. The dating of stalagtites and stalagmites at Caverna do Diabo (Brazil) follows as an example. ESR dating of archaeological materials (shells and bones) at the shell mound of Sambaqui in the Brazilian coast is presented and compared with the results of bone and shell dating in Japan. The use of ESR dating technique to indicate coffee bean oil decomposition (for the quality assessement of Brazilian coffee beans) is also described. (I.C.R.)

Abstract (Portuguese)

Descreve-se brevemente o principio de datacao por ESR ('electron spin resonance' ou ressonancia por spin de electron). Segue-se como exemplo a datacao de estalagtites e estalagmites da Caverna do Diabo (S. Paulo, Brazil). Apresenta-se a datacao por ESR de materiais arqueologicos (conchas e ossos) coletados em Sambaqui, no litoral brasileiro, e comparam-se os resultados com os resultados de datacoes de osso e concha feitos no Japao. Descreve-se tambem o uso da tecnica de datacao por ESR para indicar a decomposicao do oleo do grao de cafe (para a determinacao de qualidade de graos de cafe brasileiro). (I.C.R.)
