Description
Purpose: To introduce a self-made solid calibration phantom for bone mineral density (BMD) measurement with quantitative CT (QCT). Methods: The solid phantom was made of polyethylene-based plastics and bone matrix equivalent. The x-ray attenuation characteristics was the same as water and bone tissue on its two parts: the volume was 30.0 cm x 9.0 cm x 2.5 cm, and the weight 0.7 kg. Precise measurement of 12 vertebral specimens was done. Results: Accuracy of the phantom was by comparing the results of QCT measurement and weight of the specimens. QCT and bone ash weight had high correlation of statistical significance with r = 0.91, P<0.001. conclusion: The results showed that the solid calibration phantom is reliable, with small size, lower cost and ease of use, suitable for QCT of BMD measurement in the country
