Magnetic shielding with superconducting wires

  • 1. ISIR, Osaka Univ., Ibaraki, Osaka 567 (Japan)

Description

Magnetic shieldings with superconducting wires have been studied aiming at a practical use of superconducting shieldings. The cylindrically shaped shieldings were made by NbTi multifilamentary composite wires and impregnated with Wood's metal. It was confirmed that Wood's metal had the upper critical field of about 1 T and the superconductive junction between the wires was possible by using it. The static fields up to 1 T were applied to the shieldings and the field penetration was examined. The field of 0.5 T could be reduced to less than 10/sup -3/ T for about 30 minutes when the field up to 1 T was applied to the shielding. The magnetic stability against the pulsed field was also examined and the high performance was confirmed. It was concluded that the magnetic shieldings with superconducting wires showed capability to shield not only pulsed but also static magnetic field
