Description
Magnetic-circular-dichroism spectra are reported for Na colloids in NaCl and Ca colloids in CaF2. The spectra are interpreted by applying Mie theory and by taking account of the perturbation of the magnetic field. The theory gives a good explanation of the spectra and implies values for cyclotron masses that agree with values predicted for the metallic colloids. Interband contributions to the magnetic circular dichroism are significant for the Ca colloids and unimportant for the Na colloids
