Hyperdeformed pear-shaped nuclei
Description
Several wells are found in the potential energy surface of the actinides. The first well corresponds to the ground state deformation (ε2 ≅ 0.2). The second well accomodates fission isomers with a larger deformation (ε2 ≅ 0.6). A third well is calculated to occur at the ε2 ≅ 0.9, ε3 ± 0.2 quadrupole and octopole deformation, respectively. In this paper, we present experimental evidence for the existence of hyperdeformed pear-shaped thorium nuclei in this third well
