Peculiarities of the Cepheid distribution in the Large Magellanic Cloud
Description
The LMC Cepheid distribution is highly nonuniform. Since only those Cepheids with logP[days]<0.9 tend to congregate in the bar (the main body of the LMC), the bar ceased to be a concentration of star-formation sites about 3 x 107 yr ago; today stars are being formed in extensive regions distributed at random over the LMC. The period (age) difference of paired Cepheids diminishes as the distance between them decreases: a strong sign that star formation is an epidemic process, with Cepheids separated by as much as 500 pc having a common origin
