Gas-cooled nuclear reactor with filter

Description

The filter takes up fission products such as 137Cs, 90Sr and sup(110m)Ag from the cooling gas of gas-cooled nuclear or HTR reactors directly after the cooling gas leaves the reactor core. It consists of a graphite block with channels which have a hydraulic diameter between 1 and 6 mm. The ratio between the length of the channels and their hydraulic diameter equivalent is between 170 and 1,000. The hydraulic diameter is defined here as the ratio between the fourfold cross-sectional surface of any shape and its wetted girth. In HTR reactors, part of the graphite reflector surrounding the core may serve as a filter. For a reduction of the loss of pressure in the filter, the cooling gas may flow laterally across its face which has, e.g., apertures which collect the cooling gas to the channels. (DG/AK)

Abstract (German)

Das Filter dient zur Aufnahme von Spaltprodukten, wie Caesium 137, Strontium 90 und Silber 110m, aus dem Kuehlgas von gasgekuehlten Kern-bzw. Hochtemperaturreaktoren direkt nach dem Austritt des Kuehlgases aus dem Reaktorkern. Es besteht aus einem Graphitblock, der Kanaele aufweist, welche einen hydraulischen Durchmesser zwischen 1 mm und 6 mm besitzen. Das Verhaeltnis zwischen der Laenge der Kanaele und ihrem aequivalenten hydraulischen Durchmesser liegt zwischen 170 und 1.000. Der hydraulische Durchmesser wird hierbei als Verhaeltnis zwischen der vierfachen Querschnittsflaeche beliebiger Form und ihrem benetzten Umfang definiert. Bei Hochtemperaturreaktoren kann als Filter ein Teil des den Kern umgebenden Reflektors aus Graphit dienen. Zur Verminderung des Druckverlustes im Filter kann des Kuehlgas quer ueber dessen Stirnflaeche stroemen, wobei die Stirnflaeche mit z.B. Schlitzen versehen ist, die als Sammeleinrichtung fuer das Kuehlgas zu den Kanaelen wirken. (DG)
