Safety regulations concerning radioactive wastes produced by users of radioactive materials

Creators

Description

The wide spread use of radioisotopes in the different applications (medicine, agriculture, industry, research ... etc.) implies safe management of the resulting radioactive wastes. safety regulations were prepared to regulate this safe management. In egypt, the safety regulations comprise two parts; the first part deals with the responsibilities of the radioisotopes, while the second part deals with the responsibilities of the operator (Centre of hot laboratories of and waste management, atomic energy authority). The responsibilities of the user of the user of the radioisotopes include segregation and collection, interim storage and controlled release. Releases of any quantities of solid wastes are not allowed, while controlled releases of liquid wastes are regulated. Interim storage, its requirements, and the conditions to be fulfilled are also specified. The responsibilities of the operator include transportation, treatment, conditioning and burial. The safety requirements for all these processes are specified. The licensing for all these processes is issued by the national centre for nuclear safety and radiation control, atomic energy authority
