The influence of the natural environment on the radiological consequences of a nuclear accident

Description
Much work has been done in the agri-food field on the evaluation of the health implications of a nuclear accident. Much less has been done on environmental dynamics. Research on the behaviour of radioactive deposits from the Chernobyl accident, however, has revealed the importance of natural conditions for the transfer of radionuclides in the environment. In particular, two phases have been observed. In the first, which lasts until a point of equilibrium is reached in the environment, radionuclides follow the water cycle. The second phase unfolds following the incorporation of ruthenium and cesium in soil and sediment. Certain environmental factors (natural ecosystems, relief, etc.) and the different meteorological conditions (climate and season) should be investigated in more detail. Better understanding of the effect of natural conditions could be used to predict, in time and space, any specific risks arising during nuclear accidents whether located near or far
Abstract (French)
Beaucoup de travaux ont ete menes dans le domaine agroalimentaire pour evaluer les consequences sanitaires d'un accident nucleaire. Un nombre nettement moins important porte sur la dynamique dans le milieu. Or l'etude du comportement des depots radioactifs de Tchernobyl a mis en evidence l'importance des conditions naturelles pour la dynamique des radionucleides dans le milieu. Notamment, il a ete observe deux phases dans cette dynamique. Une phase initiale avant equilibre dans le milieu quand les radionucleides suivent le cycle de l'eau, une phase ulterieure apres incorporation des ruthenium et cesium dans les sols et les sediments. L'etude de certains phenomenes lies au milieu (ecosystemes naturels, relief...) ou a la variete des conditions meteorologiques (climats, saisons) merite d'etre approfondie. Une meilleure connaissance de l'action de ces conditions naturelles permettra la prevision dans le temps et l'espace des risques ponctuels qui pourraient se presenter lors d'accidents nucleaires plus ou moins lointainsAdditional details
