Description

Corrosion is a major degradation mechanism in reprocessing plants. In nitric acid based fast breeder reactor (FBR) spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plants, AISI type 304L, titanium etc. are used in nitric acid medium from dilute to concentrated, from room temperature to boiling condition, and in the presence of various redox ions of actinides and fission products. The performance of various components in hostile corrosive and radioactive environments decides the availability and trouble free operation of reprocessing plants. A broad based materials development programme has been in progress towards the development of materials, coating technology and corrosion monitoring for applications in spent fuel reprocessing plants
