Disposal of radioactive wastes
Description
Scientists appointed by the International Council of Scientific Unions have concluded that nuclear waste may be safely disposed of using current technology. Interim storage 50 to 100 years greatly reduces the problem of thermal loading at the final disposal sites, but more research devoted to such interim storage is needed. This paper presents a brief account of the review by the ICSU's steering committee and of the reports prepared by the working groups on terrestrial disposal, marine disposal, and environmental pathways. The conclusion and recommendations are based on several postulates that were agreed to by the steering committee and the working groups
