Statistical analysis of partial reduced width distributions

Description

The aim of this study was to develop rigorous methods for analysing experimental event distributions according to a law in chi2 and to check if the number of degrees of freedom ν is compatible with the value 1 for the reduced neutron width distribution. Two statistical methods were used (the maximum-likelihood method and the method of moments); it was shown, in a few particular cases, that ν is compatible with 1. The difference between ν and 1, if it exists, should not exceed 3%. These results confirm the validity of the compound nucleus model
