Report

Updating the data situation and analyzing data on accident frequencies and accident severity in rail freight transport as a basis for assessing the risk of transport accidents. Final report

Description

The objective of this report is to extend the statistical basis of previous evaluations of rail accident statistics with respect to goods train traffic of the Deutsche Bahn AG in order to provide basic statistical data for use in risk analysis for the transport of radioactive ma-terial. The investigation referred to events with relevant damage within the period 2002 to 2020. Relevant damage is assumed in case material damage to rail vehicles exceeds 1.500 €. For this time period the average accident rate derived is 0.39 trains with relevant damage per 1 million train-km. The ratio of the accident type "fire" was on average 9 % of all registered accidents. Furthermore, relative frequencies of exposure classes, which were already used in past transport-risk-analyses of GRS, were calculated. Due to miss-ing information on velocities, a conservative approximation for the assignment of acci-dents to the velocity-groups was applied.
