Radiolysis of alkali nitrates
Creators
Description
Solid sodium nitrate was irradiated, with low-dose 60Co gamma rays, at 770K. Radicals and other species producing oxidation were identified, and yields estimated, using different analytical techniques in the presence and absence of oxygen. Oxygen concentration determines the fate of electrons trapped in the irradiated salt. Oxidising species were identified using buffered iodine solutions. Nitrites were determined by diazotization and the formation of a dyestuff. Measurements of reducing species were also made. Results of analytical techniques are presented in terms of models for the radiolytic processes occuring in nitrates. (U.K.)
