Description
High-resolution transmission measurements were made at room temperature of the shape of the neutron resonance at 230.3 eV for 65Cu for the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7. From the shape of the resonance the effective temperature Teff for Cu in the compound was determined. An identical measurement was also made for Cu metal. Teff for Cu metal was found to be 314±28 K, while the measurement for YBa2Cu3O7 yielded a Teff of 297±28 K. This shows that the Cu phonons in YBa2Cu3O7 have the same energy scale as the phonons in Cu metal
