Crystal structures of double vanadates Ca9R(VO4)7: I. R=La, Pr, and Eu

Description
The crystal structures of Ca9R(VO4)7 [R=La (I), Pr (II), and Eu (III)] are determined by full-profile analysis. The compounds crystallize in the trigonal system (sp. gr. R3c, Z=6). The unit cell parameters are as follows: (I) a=10.8987(5) and c=38.147(1)A, V=3924.1(3) A3; (II) a=10.8808(7) and c=38.135(1)A, V=3910.0(3) A3; and (III) a=10.8651(5) and c=38.089(1)A, V=3894.0(3) A3. Calcium and rare-earth metal cations occupy statistically three sites in the structure. The site occupancies depend on the radius of the rare-earth cations. In row compounds with rare-earth cations from La to Eu, the occupancy of the M(1)and M(2) sites increases and the occupancy of the M(3) site decreases
