Effect of gamma irradiation on lifespan and offspring physiology of male drosophila melanogaster

Description

This study aimed to investigate the effects of γ-rays irradiation on adult longevity and physiological changes in F1 generation.Male Drosophila melanogaster at 1 ∼ 2 days old were irradiated by γ-rays with doses of 5, 10, 15 and 30 Gy. In all experimental groups, mean lifespan, maximum lifespan and 90% of lethaldeath irradiated flies were reduced(at P < 0.05) for compared with control. Survival rate of male flies exposed to 30 Gy was rapidly declined at early stages, but its lifespan was almost same in comparison with the other irradiated groups. The unirradiated females, which mated with the irradiated males, had a lower fecundity than control at the first 7 days, but showed have a higher fecundity after the 11 days. In offspring F1 generation of irradiated group, body weight increased, but the capacity of physiological stress declined. (authors)
