Description

Objective: To study the clinical significance of changes of blood P-selectin and TNF levels after operation in patients with rectal cancer. Methods: Serum TNF (with RIA) and plasma P-selectin (with ELISA) levels were determined in 34 patients with rectal cancer both before and after operation as well as in 35 controls. Results: Before operation, blood P-selectin and TNF levels were significantly higher in the patients than those in controls (P<0.01). Twenty-two of the 30 patients underwent operation showed no sign of recurrence at 1 year and their blood P-selectin and TNF levels dropped to within normal range. However in the 8 patients with recurrence, blood levels of P-selectin and TNF remained abnormally high (vs those without recurrence, P < 0. 01). Conclusion: Blood P-selectin and TNF levels were closely related to the disease process of rectal cancer and were of prognostic values. (authors)
