Salient features of the VEC switching magnet : [Part] 1

  • 1. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay (India). Variable Energy Cyclotron Project

Description

A beam switching magnet, weighin.o. 8 tonnes has been fabricated and installed in the Vault area of the 224 cm VEC at Calcutta. The magnet is capable of bending 65 MeV deuterons through a maximum angle of 50deg to the right. Low carbon steel cast at the Heavy Engineering Corporation, Ranchi is used for the magnet frame. Hollow aluminium conductor supplied by M/s. Indian Aluminium Co., is used for the energizing coils. The vacuum chamber fabricated out of an aluminium alloy has the two magnet pole faces as its sides. Detailed field mapping in the median plane of the magnet has been carried out, and the performance is found to be quite satisfactory. (author)
