Description
Within a project financially supported by the European Union, extended hydrochemical and hydroisotopic investigations were performed in the Upper Rhine Valley throughout several years. Combining environmental isotope methods (mainly 3H, 18O, 85Kr, 39Ar and 14C) with results from investigation of traces of CFCs enabled a detailed investigation of vertical and horizontal groundwater age distributions. The groundwater ages (mean residence times) range from a few years up to more than 10,000 years. A differentiated evaluation of the age distributions within the very young groundwater component succeeded only when the 3H, 85Kr and CFC dating methods were combined
