Study of the dynamics of an intense beam through an achromatic bend

  • 1. GA Technologies Inc., San Diego, CA (USA)

Description

When an intense ion beam passes through a magnetic bend, the space charge effect combines with the chromatic dispersion effect to produce emittance growth. An interesting problem is how to match the beam and minimize emittance growth. In this paper, the authors present a theoretical and numerical study of an intense beam passing through an achromatic bend. Criteria for the minimization of emittance growth are given. Numerical results of the dependence of emittance growth on beam parameters are presented
