Fabrication source technology development for innovative metal fuel

  • 1. Next-Generation Fuel Technology Development Division, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Daejeon (Korea, Republic of)

Description

The development of innovative metal fuel manufacturing source technology is a task to develop a core base technology for metal fuel manufacturing technology with high safety and combustion, and a high-performance metal fuel manufacturing process that can reduce process waste by omitting the sodium filling process and simplifying the casting process. In order to verify the manufacturing technology of recycled nuclear fuel, the first in Korea to manufacture U-10Zr metal fuel cores (18.2kg, 78 units/batch) remotely by using mock-up facilities and engineering-scale injection molding equipment necessary for remote manufacturing technology development succeeded.Particle fuel process conditions that can be controlled within 5% of the particle distribution uniformity in the range of 65 to 75% of the filling rate are derived, and based on this, the development of high-safety particulate metal fuel by successfully manufacturing preliminary prototypes Performed. In addition, by establishing a continuous casting system and a PC-based data collection system, data from the continuous casting process were collected in real time, the core technology of the high-safety continuous casting manufacturing process was secured by success in the annular and U fuel. The correlation of the anisotropy change according to the extrusion process conditions was investigated, and the optimum process conditions to improve anisotropy after extrusion were derived. In addition, by examining the shape factors of the new concept metal fuel to derive the final shape, perform thermal analysis on the derived shape, and perform the simulation fuel additive manufacturing to secure the manufacturing requirements evaluation data. Combustion also secured the base technology for a new concept metal fuel
