Breast cancer diagnostic system using small angle X-ray scattering

Description

Current breast imaging methods, such as mammography or ultrasounds, sometimes yield inconclusive results and require a biopsy to confirm the absence of pathology. This leads to a large number of biopsies, which are invasive, stressful and time-consuming. To address this problem, new diagnostic methods, including coherent X-ray scattering, are explored. Coherent X-ray scattering is a promising method for improving diagnosis, as it yields information about the molecular structure of the breast tissues.This thesis explores the use of coherent X ray scattering to refine in vivo breast tissue characterization, as a supplementary technique, in addition to suspicious mammography. An experimental set-up for coherent X ray scattering spectra acquisition and an associated data processing methods, including classification, are proposed. The delivered dose is also studied in view of an in vivo application. The complete method is experimentally validated on plastic and biological phantoms. Obtained results are very encouraging, however improvement is still needed in order to meet clinical requirements. A few ways of improvements are suggested for the continuation of this project. Abstract (French)

Les methodes actuelles d'imagerie, telles que la mammographie ou les ultrasons donnent parfois des resultats peu concluants et necessitent des biopsies pour confirmer l'absence de pathologie. Cela mene a un grand nombre de biopsies, qui sont invasives, stressantes, et prennent du temps. Pour repondre a ce probleme, de nouvelles methodes de diagnostic, dont la diffusion coherente de rayons X, sont explorees. La diffusion coherente de rayons X reflete la structure moleculaire des tissus, rendant cette technique particulierement interessante dans le contexte d'amelioration de diagnostic. Cette these etudie l'exploitation de la diffusion coherente de rayons X pour affiner la caracterisation in vivo des tissus mammaires, en vue d'une future utilisation en complement d'une mammographie suspecte. Un montage experimental d'acquisition de spectres diffuses et une methode de traitement de donnees associee allant jusqu'a la classification sont proposes. La dose deposee est egalement etudiee, dans la perspective d'une utilisation in vivo. La methode complete fait l'objet de validations experimentales sur fantomes plastiques et biologiques. Les resultats obtenus sont tres encourageants, cependant des ameliorations seront necessaires pour atteindre les exigences cliniques. Quelques pistes pour la suite de ce projet sont egalement proposees
