Liquid Dynamics from Neutron Spectrometry

Description

Recent experiments carried out at Chalk river on the dynamics of liquids using neutron inelastic scattering are reviewed, including one by Sakamoto et al, in which theh Van Hove self-correlation functions in water at 25oC and 75oC were determined, and another in which the correlation functions in liquid argon near its triple point were studied. The possible occurrence of short wavelength phonons in classical liquids is discussed, in analogy with their existence in the quantum liquid He4, and in connection with incomplete experiments on liquid tin. Abstract (French)

Le memoire decrit les experiences faites recemment a Chalk River sur la dynamique des liquides d'apres la diffusion inelastique des neutrons. Il analyse notamment une experience effectuee par Sakamoto et ses collaborateurs, au cours de laquelle ont ete determinees les fonctions d'autocorrelation de Van Hove dans l'eau a 25oC et a 75oC, ainsi qu'une experience ayant pour objet d'etudier les fonctions de correlation dans l'argon liquide aux environs de son point triple. Les auteurs discutent l'existence eventuelle de phonons de courte longueur d'onde dans les liquides classiques, du fait de leur existence dans le liquide quantique 4He et compte tenu des resultats d'experiences incompletes avec l'etain liquide. Abstract (Spanish)

Se revisan los experimentos efectuados recientemente en Chalk River para estudiar la dinamica de liquidos por dispersion in elastica de neutrones; entre los experimentos figura uno de Sakamoto y colaboradores en el que se determinaron las funciones de autocorrelacion de Van Hove en agua a 25o y 75oC, y otro en el que se estudiaron las funciones de correlacion en argon liquido en las proximidades de su punto triple. En relacion con experimentos con estano liquido aun sin terminar, se discute la posibilidad de que en los liquidos clasicos aparezcan fonones de onda corta, que existen en el liquido cuantico 4He.
