Acute toxicity of ingested ruthenium-106

Description
The median lethal ingested dose of 106Ru for adult, weanling, and newborn rats was about 9, 20, and 2 mCi/kg, respectively. Death from gastrointestinal damage in dogs occurred at doses between 3.5 and 4.0 mCi/kg. Death was usually caused by severe damage to the lower bowel where the radiation dose was highest due to the prolonged residence time in that segment. Incorporation of 106Ru in the epithelium of the small intestine of the newborn contributed to the sensitivity of that age group. (U.S.)
