A geological approach to the problem of nuclear waste disposal

Description

This paper gives a short view at the problems associated with high level nuclear waste disposal in geological formations. First some properties of high level waste are mentioned to assess the influence the radwaste imposes upon the site where it will be disposed. Then the philosophy behind disposal underground is discussed. It is shown that many details are unknown, but a multiple barrier backing-up system can be designed, to aim at overall-security. Finally the disposal concept for the Netherlands - a repository mine in a salt dome - is compared with such an ideal model. (Auth.)
