Controlled nuclear fusion
Description
An introduction is given to fusion reactions and inertial and magnetic plasma confinement, with a description of a design for an experimental power plant. This is followed by a discussion of the main components of a tokamak thermonuclear reactor, first wall and blanket, magnet and heating systems, and the fuel cycle. Energetics and economic analyses are also given together with safety and environmental aspects. The energy reserves of deuterium-tritium fusion are reviewed. Progress to date and future developments are discussed. (U.K.)
