Superdeformation in 198Po at GAMMASPHERE
Description
A previous experiment at Early Implementation GAMMASPHERE using the 174Yb(29Si,5n)2919884Po reaction revealed a candidate for a superdeformed (SD) band. A follow-up experiment at GAMMASPHERE with the same reaction has been performed and the results will be discussed. A large number of SD and Ml rotational bands have been discovered in recent years in nuclei near Z∼79-83 and N∼110-116, including Bi (Z=83) nuclei. Calculations by Bonche, et al., and Satula, et al., predict second minima for prolate deformation with Β 0.5 for the polonium nuclei
