Safety philosophy and implications on plant design of Sizewell 'B'

Description

This paper briefly describes the Central Electricity Generating Board's approach to achieving safety of its nuclear power stations and the way in which this safety approach is translated into design provisions on Sizewell 'B' is illustrated. The two examples chosen are: protection against fire, and engineering a safe shutdown. The first of these is the internal hazard that has the greatest effect on the detailed internal building layout because of the resulting segregation requirements for the safety trains of equipment. The second example shows how the safety targets are achieved by engineering sufficient redundancy and diversity into the systems required to safely shutdown the reactor. (author)
