A comparison of three methods for the assay of anti-DNA antibodies

Description
265 sera taken over a period of 18 months from 42 patients with well defined SLE were assayed for anti-dsDNA antibody by haemagglutination, a Farr-type radioimmunassay and by ELISA. The haemagglutination assay was found to correlate with IgM anti-DNA determined by ELISA (r=0.75) while the Farr assay correlated better with IgG anti-DNA (r=0.59). This partially explained the poor correlation between the haemagglutination and Farr assays (r=0.35). Serial samples from the same patient tended to show the same pattern of positivity by the different assays. Overall, the ELISA detected a higher percentage (70%) of positive sera than the haemagglutination (30%) or Farr (38%) assays
