Corrosion resistance of Zirconium and Titanium alloy in HNO3 solutions

  • 1. Kobe Steel, Ltd., 1-chome, Wakinohama-cho, Chuo-ku, Kobe

Description

The corrosion resistance of Zr, Ti-5%Ta alloy, Ti and Type 304L stainless steel were investigated in boiling HNO3 solutions with and without Ru, Rh and Pd ions, which are ones of fission product elements with high redox potential. Zr and Ti-5%Ta alloy showed perfect corrosion resistance regardless of these added ions: Ti was subject to general corrosion in HNO3 solution without Ru ions but its corrosion rate decreased markedly with an increase of Ru ions concentration. The corrosion resistance of 304L was inferior to those of Zr, Ti-5%Ta alloy and Ti
