Radiological impact of atmospheric releases from a coal-fired power plant
- 1. CEA, Fontenay-aux-Roses (France)
Description
An assessment of the radiological impact of atmospheric releases from a coal-fired power plant is presented. The atmospheric releases of the major naturally occurring radionuclides have been estimated from analysis of samples of coal and ash as well as from measurements in the stock. The atmospheric concentrations and the environmental transfers of the various radionuclides released were assessed using environmental models. The effective dose equivalents received by the critical group have been calculated for the inhalation, vegetable consumption, and external irradiation pathways. The coal-fired power plant has been assumed to operate for 30 years and the annual effective dose equivalents corresponding to the last year of operation have been estimated; in addition, the variation with time of the annual effective dose equivalents delivered after the power plant ceases operation has been calculated. The doses estimated were found in all cases to be much lower than the regulatory limits. Measurements have also been carried out in air and in vegetation around the plant. The small concentrations obtained are difficult to interpret because of the variability of the natural background
