Melting makes the most of scrap metals

Description
Radioactivity limits for freely releasing metals recycled by melting scrap from decommissioned nuclear installations have yet to be agreed internationally, but the materials are already being used to make shielding and radioactive-waste containers in the countries producing them. Steps towards setting acceptable release levels, developments in melting technologies, and comparisons with the costs of decontamination or disposal were discussed at an EC seminar held in Krefeld, Germany, from 27 to 29 October last year, and are reported here.
