Deformation mechanisms in the beta treated zirconium

  • 1. Ecole Polytechnique, 91 - Palaiseau (France)

Description

An experimental study has been carried out concerning the effects of a beta thermal treatment on the mechanical characteristics of zirconium under single traction, at ambient temperature. Crystallographic observations and mechanical tests show that the alpha to beta to alpha thermal process may lead to an addition-element distribution heterogeneity that entails the localization of sliding and subsequently of damage along the joint. Cavity coalescence is then followed by material fracture. (A.B.)
