By December 31, 2024, 731 facilities were injecting biomethane, after biogas production and purification, into natural gas networks. Their capacity amounted to 13.9 TWh/year, up 15% on the end of 2023. Additional capacity of 1,788 GWh/year was installed in 2024, less than that installed over the same period in 2023 (2,450 GWh/year). Fifty percent of the fleet is made up of small-scale plants with a capacity of less than 15 GWh/year, which nevertheless account for only 27% of total installed capacity. Methanization units account for 91% of total capacity. At the end of 2024, the capacity of the 972 projects in the pipeline was 14.7 TWh/year, up 4% on the end of 2023. In addition, 11 non-methanization biomethane facilities (synthetic methane obtained by pyrogasification) are planned, with a maximum production capacity of 736 GWh/year. Production of biomethane injected into networks continues to grow. It reached 3.1 TWh PCS in the fourth quarter of 2024, up 20% on the fourth quarter of 2023. It represents 1.6% of total gas injections into the network during this quarter (1.4% in Q4 2023). Four regions - Grand Est, Hauts-de-France, Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Ile-de-France - accounted for 55% of installed capacity and 59% of injections at the end of the fourth quarter 2024
